for n-400 home addresses and employment record can we put just month and year for start and end or we must put exact dates?

They want exact dates. If you cannot remember or cannot get that exact info, put in your best estimate. Or you could simply call the HR department of your past employers and ask for the dates.

In the instructions available on USCIS website, in their example they only use month and year.

I was surprised too. On the main page, there is a link to Instruction for Form 400. Part 6 of that shows an example and uses only month and year.

Any more input on this

looks like still it is not clear. can we just use mo/yr for residence and employment dates

I think it is clear. They might have messed up on the example, but on the N-400 form it clearly shows MM/DD/YYYY. In fact, if you check all of the form, all dates are in the MM/DD/YYYY format.

To get the exact work dates, call your ex-employer(s) HR department.

To get the exact address dates, call your ex-apartment leasing office.

If I remember correctly, I only listed the month and year, too. Adobe Reader kept giving me a warning message after each block where MMDDYYYY was required since I was only listing MMYYYY, but I ignored it, and it was fine.

They prefer exact dates, but approximate dates (month/year) are usually OK, for travel, employment and addresses.
The only exceptions are if the dates in question directly effect your naturalization eligibility. For example, if you file N-400 shortly after moving to a new state, they'll want the exact date of the move to make sure that you have satisfied the 90 days state/district residency requirement by the time of filing N-400.
