Does getting SSN for wife invalidate her H4?

Guys,

My wife received her EAD card a little while ago and I need to get her either a TIN number or a SSN.

From what I have read, I can go down with her passport and her EAD card and apply for a SSN.

My question is, does getting her a SSN invalidate her H4 visa? She doesn't intend to work yet and till we have got our GC, we have both decided to try to maintain our H visa status.

Thanks,

Answer is No

No

does buying a tylenol from a drug store invalidate your medical insurance ?

same situation here

Rav,

It is good to use the H1/H4 status as much as possible until you get your GC. Usually it is better to keep EAD, just in case if you want to change the employer it will be easy. One key point is once you start using the EAD, your H1 void and you can not go back to H1 status.

So this is the specific question. If I only use the EAD card to get my wife to get her a SSN and then not use it for a job etc, will she maintain her H4 status?

She will not work after getting the SSN. Is this okay to maintain her H4 status?

Yep I think it is her H4 is valid.

SSN were originally designed just for retirement purposes. They are used primarily to track earnings.

When she was on H4, I trust you filed your IRS returns with her TIN #. Now, you will use SSN instead of TIN.

Needless to say, talking to a lawyer is very wise. Same cannot be said about talking to a sloth...even if a fast one :)

As long as you (H1) or your wife (H4) not showing the EAD to work in US, the current H1 and H4 status is good to maintain as such. But you can use this EAD for driver license renewal, photo identification, SSN, etc.
To answer your specific question, yes. If you use the EAD to get SSN, will not impact the H4 status and your wife will be in H4 status.
