My TN will be expired in May. I am thinking of going to the border to renew it. Is there anybody who has experience with Detroit POE? I heard that I have to avoid big POEs like Toronto pearson airport as much as possible. Is it the same case as Detroit POE? Is it ok that I renew it 3 - 4 weeks before expiration date? If my renewal gets denied, can I still come into the US since my previous TN is still valid? My job title is software engineer and I have a master degree in computer engineering from a Canadian university.

Personal experience from 11 years ago - pain in the ass.

See Grasmick's website for this. You need to look around but he talks about the Detroit POE. It's a little dated so it may no longer be valid.

Try calling the POE ahead and see what they say.

In answer to your other question, your current TN will remain valid if your new petition is denied on a technical error/missing documant.

However, if YOU are denied entry, due to the belief that YOU don't qualify for TN, or are otherwise inadmissable, you probably wouldn't be allowed in uinder any circumstance, and they would pull your current TN>

I got my first TN (back in 1996 I think) from the Detroit tunnel as I had heard from friends the bridge was a lot more of a pain to get it at. So my experience wasn't too bad, other then the agent told me to change the category I was under from Scientific Tech to Urban Planning. That required me to go back (lived in Windsor at the time so it wasn't a big hassle) get it changed and then went back awhile later and they issued my TN.

I have heard it's one of the more problematic ones though, but compared to other people and some friends of mine (others seem to have good experiences there), my experience wasn't that bad...
