Does a US PR need an unexpired passport to go to Canada and coem back?

Candadians will take the GC only. I'm planning on a trip in April and will show the GC only (keeping my passport in my pocket of course). Will post details then.

Last year, I drove to Canada twice and was not asked to show the passport on either side of the border. Of course, I had it with me but was planning to show only if asked. The GC states the country of birth anyways!

WARNING!. You do Need passport

Hello my friends,

A word of warning!. You ARE REQUIRED to carry your passport with you when crossing the border. Eventhough, I was never ask to show it but my friend as ask to show his passport when we were coming back via Port Huron. Another case I 'ved heard is at Saute St. Marie, where GC holder was ask for his passport.

I don't go to canada on frequent basis, but my friend does, so he was also suprise was ask for passport. I would carry it when crossing the border. Just my opinion.

No, a PR is not required to have a passport when entering the US.
8 CFR 211.2 says:
"(a) A passport valid for the bearer's entry into a foreign country at least 60 days beyond the expiration date of his or her immigrant visa shall be presented by each immigrant except an immigrant who:
[...]
(2) Is entering under the provisions of § 211.1(a)(2) through (a)(7); "

So, the GC is enough. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have your passport with you, but it is not a requirement.

Joe is right, a passport is not required for re-entry into the US. However, it is not unusual to be asked for *two* pieces of identification when entering from Canada. This is a post 9/11
thing.

PR in the United States are specifically exempt from needing a visa to enter Canada. Showing the PR card is usually enough. I'm a Canadian Citizen and even *I* enter Canada using my Green Card.

Most people carry their driver's license on daily basis
anyway so that DL and GC are perfect two forms
of identifications if 2 are required
