Does 1yr requirement prior to adjustment mean continuous or not?

Can some please clarify this:
Asylees are eligible to apply for the adjustment of the status after 1 year of being granted asylum. Someone mentioned that the count towards that one year is reset every time the person leaves the country. I looked up the instructions for i485 and it doesn't say that 1yr has to be of continuous presence. Can someone please comment.
