Do you report your taxes while working off the books?

Hi

I held F1 status before I applied for political asylum, and since I didn't have work authorization I've found a job that pays cash. I heard that during the interview they ask: "how do you support yourself"? My lawyer told me to say that I work. Now I think it will be better if I report my taxes and show them that I am a good resident, but I don't know how it will influence my case because I didn't have a legal right to work. Can anyone give me an advise?

According to tax law, anyone who has income (that is above a certain level) is required to file taxes. It doesn't matter if they have work authorization or not. In fact, that you've filed taxes when required to will be important in your immigration process.

can you tell me what is a certain level?

Every year's 1040 form instructions has a table near the beginning, after "Do You Have To File?". For 2013, for people under 65, it's $10000 for single, $20000 for married filing jointly, and $3900 for married filing separately.
