I and my wife got our GCs in the past year. I will spend about 6 months overseas for a sabbatical year starting from this September. Should we apply for AP? What is the requirement for GC holders to enter USA? Where can I find official information? Thanks.

Green card holders who spend less than 6 months abroad can usually return to US with no further issues. If you spend more than 6 months but less than 1 year you may be subject to further questioning. if you spend more than 1 year you should have a re-entry permit which allows you to return after spending 1-2 years abroad.

AP is not the correct document for green card holders; it is only for those who are waiting for green cards.

Check these resources at USCIS:

Thanks for the reply. If I leave USA on Jan 1, and return to USA on May 19. Then, I leave USA for another 90 days starting from Jun 10. Should that be ok? Where can I find official requirements to reenter usa for GC holders? Thanks.

You should be OK if you did just that. Apply for a re-entry permit just to cover any unexpected delays (you can also try to get the cost of re-entry permit re-imbursed from your employer).

The requirement are spelled out in the documents I refer to.

The additional questioning is to establish to the satisfaction of immigration inspector that you have not abandoned US as your place of residence if you stay abroad more than 6 months.

And this questioning can take a long time, so it is normally done in a separate room called secondary inspection.
