Hi there,

I'm going to be applying for naturalization in a few weeks and I wanted to know whether I need to have copies of my W-2's for the last five years. I am not applying through marriage--I obtained my green card through my parents 5 years ago and am applying on that basis. I have all my tax returns for the last 5 years, just not the W-2s--only have those for this past year. I can get the ones from earlier years, but it's expensive ($57 per year!) and so if it's not necessary I would prefer not to.

Thank you for all information provided!

I don't think you need it! I got my copies from the IRS "just in case" for free, there is a form that you fill and fax to them.....Im sure someone can tell you the name of the form right now I can't remember......you can get them if you want but is not required.

You can get your free tax return transcripts of last 4 years and a copy of account transcript for 1 year by calling this number:1-800-829-1040 or send a form 4506-T by fax for quick response.

Nope, usually the only things you typically need are GC, passports to verify trips, driver license to verify residency and that's usually it. Of course IO sometimes ask for other documents, so take your pick.

As has been mentioned, your W-2s are not important. You Tax Returns do not indicate you current tax status though.

I suggest you call the IRS 800 number and ask for transcripts for the last 5 years. They are free and they will arrive in your mail in about 10 days. They will show if you owe Taxes or not, whereas the Tax returns only suggest they have been filed as there is no proof they were ever mailed and received by the IRS.
