Do I need to return while waiting for the re-entry permit to process?

Hi I have a question about re-entry permit application. I've applied for the re-entry permit recently and they were able to re-use my biometrics (which I believe that I can travel after). However upon checking the re-entry permit processing time, it is about 14.5months now. So my questions are:
1) Do I have to return to the USA while waiting for the re-entry permit to process (14.5months)?
1a) If so, what is the longest time I can stay outside before returning while the re-entry permit is processing?

If all goes according to plan and the permit is sent to you before 2 years are up, no problems. You can stay out. HOWEVER, what if it's lost in the post, or some other unforeseen event prevents you from receiving it and you've been out for over a year? I would not risk being out of the country over even 6 months in the current climate. Come back every six months at least until you get it (like, 160 days or so).
