DO I need to file for an H1B extension before filing I-485?

HI,
I am hoping to get my I140 approved soon, and have been looking at the last stage options.
Background information. My H1B expires in April 2002, still within my 6 years.
I am considering AOS. Can I apply for the AOS (assuming my I-140 gets approved) before my visa expires? IS it recommended?
Can I still work? since My visa will have expired after April, but the EAD takes at least 90 days to be processed.
Could someone please reply, since this plays an important role in deciding where to pay the extra money and fly out of the country for CP or not?
I am sure someone has asked similiar questions on the forum, but I have not been able to find an answer.

THanks in advance

Your H1B expires in Apr and I am assuming thats the end of 6 years, you can apply for AOS before the visa expires. but once visa expires you cannot work legally unless you get your EAD. so either you have to make sure that EAD comes within apr 2002. or you can file extension of H1 after filing AOS. The rule is if 140 is pending or AOS pending then H1 can be extended beyond 6 years.
