Divorce during conditional GC

I have a friend who is going through hard times in his marriage with a USC. He got a great job at a well known hospital and being a wonderful person, it's hard to see him suffer through his marriage with the USC. Can he apply for a different visa so he can stay in the US and eventually stay permanently? Please advise.

What is the process? Should his employer file for him while he is in the country or does he need to go back home? His conditional GC is good until Oct 2013.

If he gets divorced, he should immediately file for removal of conditions and provide evidence of a good faith marriage.
