HI All,
My wife is taking maternity leave -- but only 6 weeks will be paid.
Some body told her that they can get disablity befinite for rest (another 6 weeks).
A quicksearch in Social security web site makes me thing this is not true..
Does any body know any information about this?

Also, I am thinking given that we want to become citizen (we received our GC 2 years ago) -- even if she quilifies this is not good idea.. as it might look bad to the immigration offcial during inetrview. Am I right?
Thanks in advance

I am not aware of any public disability program available for pregnancy. In our company, pregnancy qualifies you for "pregnancy leave" (not disability, at least for normal pregnancies), and these leaves are mandated by State law.

Applying for any public benefit to which you are entitled should not affect your right to apply for citizenship.

first, you get short term disability for 6 weeks (natural birth) and 8-12 weeks (c-section) - if you or your employer actually purchased short term disability coverage for you. Then, you can elect to use FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) - unpaid time off. You are usually eligible for STD and FMLA if you worked for your company for more than a year (depends on the company size).

if you are inelible for those, you can only use your vacation days.
