Difficult choice - any suggestions?

I would be grateful if you could help us with some clarifications on the US GC.
1. My friend won the visa lottery and intends to move to the US with his wife and a child. However the wife has just started doing her 2 years masters currently. Is it possible for the wife to go with him to the US and then come back to complete her masters? What are the dos and donts at stake?
2. Can he defer that of the wife and childs visa processing now till the wife completes her master in 2 years time?
3.Any additional information is welcomed

they all need to get the visa now and then she can go back to her home country to complete her studies or she could do her masters in the states.

She can go with him and comeback after a short while just to activate her visa and collect greencard, however DV 2010 will end at 30 september 2010 so she cant afford to wait for 2 years. Selectees are more than available visa's, delay could be dangerous.

Thank you Chinasa12 and Johnkent for the reply. The worry is, what are the dos and donts of travelling in and out of US for the wife to do her masters studies while they are on the green card? How long does she and or the child have to stay outside the US? Is there any direction/link or guidance on entry and exit whiles on GC. What about re-entry applications and stuffs like that?

I don't know much about the department of state (DOS) inner workings but once she has the greencard, she can enter the states at any time she wants, however, from what i learnt online, a greencard holder doesn't need to apply for re-entry when he/she wants to enter the states but is advised to stay in the in US for atleast two and a half years before the valid ten years of the greencard, so he/she can be eligible to do AOS after five years.

I don't know the basis of the petition but she could get the Green Card now and ask for an Advance Parole for reentry permit. The reentry permit is needed if she will be abroad for more than 1 year and less than 2 years.

She needs to be very careful not to abandon her resident status though.

For more than a year but for less than 2 years. It doesn't matter how long if she shows intention of abandoning her resident status (check the USCIS documents regarding this issue).
