I received my cancelled check that I sent to VSC for N-400. I see two different ECS numbers on the front and back of check for both me and my wife. One of the numbers actaully has a date prior to the date I sent my application in - checked that online.

Something wrong here ? What do people see on the front and back of their checks?

Hi blister1889!!
You should not worry. When I received my check I had hand-written number on the front (which is the actual case #) and different printed # on the back.
When I checked statutes for both numbers , what I realized is that priority date for case # printed in the back was exactly the date I was eligible for naturalization whilecase # handwritten on the front was priroty date when my application was received.
I used # on the front (which matched the number on my receipt) to check on the status, and now I am scheduled for interview in January.
Anyhow you should go by # on your receipt which should match one of the numbers on your check.
Long story short, nothing to worry about. It is common.

My check was cashed recently, after sending the N-400 form to TSC. There's no number written on the front of my check, but there is a printed SSC # on the back, which, when checked online, it has a receipt date of Sept 2005. There's a bunch other printed and stamped numbers on the back of my check, but I wasn't successful in determining the correct receipt number. I haven't gotten my receipt notice yet.
