Guys,

Please share yours or friends experiece of crossing the border to Canada as landed canadian immigrant while on AOS in USA.

what is the experience while coming back to USA.

I don't know what is AOS but i landed in canada through detroit, then came back after an overnight stay. I had AP so i just entered without any hassles. this was about a year ago and i'm trying to think if they even asked for AP because i still had the valid h1 visa stamp on my passport. Although i do remember, i did not have to step out of the car.

Thanks deputydawg.
AOS is adustment of status. What did the ask you at the US border while coming back.

I am Canadian and AOS………………….
I cross Detroit border every month to Toronto and I have a valid H1B.
H1B s enough but if your H1B is not valid and you do not have an advance parole your AOS will be terminated and you will not allowed coming back to USA. It is like deporting yourself and I don't know if they allow you to apply again. The good thing is you are going to Canada and don't forget you have to get your PR card from Canada before DEC 31, 2003 otherwise your landed immigrant paper will not be valid. Check this link for more Information.

Good luck and think twice before you star driving to Canada

Thanks wwossen.

I have valid AP. I am curious what other documents we should carry to show INS at the border while coming back.

Do we need to park the car, get off the car and enter INS office to get new I-94. Or we just show the AP sitting in the car and leave the place.

I want to come back on the same day.
Any precautions one should be aware of.

Thanks

i go to canada often times to visit friends, casinos etc. sometimes they ask you to come out of the car and go see INS officers inside, there they check your AP. but if they let you pass without having to get out, then they only check the AP or valid visa etc.

I always felt going into canada everytime is more of a hassle because as a PR of canada, you're suposed to be living in canada. sometimes the canadian officials can be downright nasty.

I don't recommend going back and forth unless it is work related or absolutely necessary. so do as i say not as i do . :>

Thanks deputydawg.

I would be going for the first time. After that I am not sure if I would be going quiet often. I am going for landing and come back right away.

What documents else they ask for.
Do u suggest I need to carry Employment letter, tax returns, pay stubs, receipt notice, etc.

Please .....

It is good to have those things and do answer what the IIO asks do not try to explain try to give short answer. You know don't ask don't tell scenario. You will have no problem since you have a valid AP.

Are they going to stop you?

There is 50/50 chance and it all depends on the mood of the IIO most of the time they are very reasonable and cooperative.

If they stop you and talk another IIO for further questioning it is OK since you are legal and you have all the necessary documents.

Good luck.
