I spoke to my financial aid conselor, who spoke to the loan officer at Sallie Mae.

Long story short : they still won't budge. Have to be resident alien only to qualify for a student loan through them.

All I am trying to do is to finance my education - why has this to be so tough?

meLBERTY2, we are Resident Aliens. What are they talking about??? There is no legel way for them to refuse you based on your immigration status. Show her you immigration documents, or if you already did, what did they say?? How can they say that you are not Resident Alien? What are we now? These people pissing me off. They tried to do the same thing with me, but didn't succeed. I have a loan through Sallie Mae ... unbelievable ...

Did you finally get the money,I mean the private loan for your school?I am currently in the same situation. The bbank(WELLs FARGO)is saying I am not a permenant resident.

I am attending medical school (MD program) at the University of Southern California and I have had NO problem obtaining loans. As an aside, I think I am taking out more loans that I should.

I earned my undergraduate degree from Cal Tech and no problem there either.

I do not know why you two have such problems.

Rudo,

As info, my niece is a dental student at the University of Pennsylvania. She is getting all the loans she needs. Penn considers asylum the equivalent of permanent resident status.

Good luck.
