I am very sad for the departure of Pope John Paul II. This man was refugees and asylees' best friend. He was also a magnet for humanity and fought for social justice. He appointed a cardinal whose sole job was to monitor the treatments of refugees all over the world. He was also a champion of the poor and the defenseless. Here is a beautiful quote where he criticizes the vicious nature of capitalism.
"This determination is based on the solid conviction that what is hindering full development is that desire for profit and that thirst for power already mentioned. These attitudes and 'structures of sin' are only conquered - presupposing the help of divine grace - by a diametrically opposed attitude: a commitment to the good of one's neighbor with the readiness, in the gospel sense, to 'lose oneself' for the sake of the other instead of exploiting him, and to 'serve him' instead of oppressing him for one's own advantage."
He had such a beautiful soul.

I will let people in this forum respond to you. You are not worth my response.

Please think before you respond to anything. This is very low. People like YOU start the religious conflicts. It doesn't matter what religion person belong to. We have only one GOD, but a lot of people forget or even don't know about it.

You obviously do not know who this "Shamshon" guy is. Do some research. Not too long ago he made a stunning confession here.

He's Holiness (the Pope of Popes) was a great man. He's wisdom and believe in faith kept up the hope in many suffering and combined with the great Ronald Regan's (Ronaldus the Magnus) believe in freedom and relentless pursue of demolishing communism helped bring changes to the world that many thought would not be possible. Many including me and my family who suffered under the communism owe THEM big time!!!

I don't wanna judge anybody. Everybody make mistakes. I know one thing. People should not fight or argue because of the way they believe in God. I don't think that's what He expects form us. Believe is the only beatifull think left in this life so don't make i ugly.

I am sorry but every religious "diety" wants peace. From the head of Christians(Pope) to the head of jews etc....What I don't understand is..Everyone knows the POPE...Does anyone know who the "Pope" of Jews or the "POPE" Of Muslims or "POPE" of Hindus? Or the "POPE" of any other religion is?

Dont get me wrong. Ok he was a great man....What exactly has he done to be called great? HIS POSITION made him great. Sorry to be blunt. Did he avoid the IRaq war? WAs he there to stop from Soviets to invade Afghanistan? Did he ever stop a war. I hear these people say "he was the man of peace"...Excuse me..He is the POPE..is he supposed to say.."SCREW YOU ALL" or "screw the peace" ???...Give me a break ok? his position made him talk about peace...

Just because the World's Powerful nation..U.S.A has majority catholics..he was known widely. I would respect these religious "dieties" if and only if other religious heads were also known around the world.

I didn't know him personally, but he was kind person, I'm sure. I'm not christian but have a great respect to this religion. We have to unite and forget about differences. Thats the whole point. I always been taught to say nice things about people who died. Thats what i do.

Hola all!!!

My point is simple, we shouldn't question religion or their leaders because it will be a never ending topic.
Regarding the Pope's main purpose in life for the catholic people and christians is something simbolic. He is supposed to be the last step between the mortal world and the next life. He's God's principal representant on earth. Of course he won't be able to stop wars, of course he won't be able to, or poverty...etc..nobody can, just ourselves. We come to this world with liberties so I believe that most of the problems nowadays in the world is because of our own decisions. Example, If you have a dictator in your country--why in the hell people supported him??; if there's people dying in Africa because of lack of food?--Why they come up with racist wars hutus/tutsis knowing that wars bring poverty at the end...and the list keeps going and going...every act has a consequence. And acts are made by people. That's why I supported war dude. Because if a person is evil, it should be removed from power, like Sadam Not because I was hoped that he Pope intervention could change Saddams ideology. Also, I don't think that the Pope became famous because USA made it famous, here catholics are only 25%. In latinamerican countries we catholics account at least 90% of each coutry's population so we don;'t need USA to make him known widely. We have been folowing his life since he was proclaimed Pope in 1978. He has visited each latin american country at least two times.

I am catholic, I am a little sad about the news heard today. It's time to meditate. And please respect the dead of this person, don't make it a political topic for discussion. If you were catholic you shouldn't been questioning his life at all, so please if you are muslim, budist or from other religion.,..please respect.

The message before was for Wantmygcnow.

Arizona_poet..I am not saying anything bad. I am just saying that its hypocricy...thats all. I dont understand is that lots of catholic priests have been found guilty of abusing young boys...in the U.S...And the POPE was well known for his hatred of homosexuality..etc!..

We are just discussing things..no one is dissing anyone.

...Majority Catholics in USA
Just because other religions don't have a figure or got hijacked from lunatics who interpret holy books whichever way suits there sick ideas doesn't have anything to do with honoring Him. I don't practice any religion actually I come from a Muslim family but I think he used his position to do many Good things...this thread started to honor the man ...

"A legacy of homophobia" by John Gallagher

I agree a lot with the article bellow, and I hope the conservatives here can really read this till the end.

For anyone under 30, it's hard to imagine the Catholic Church as anything other than an ideological monolith -- intentionally insulated, closed to outsiders and incredibly hostile to gays and lesbians. After all, these are the folks who labeled us "morally disordered" and even "evil." And for that, we have John Paul II to thank.

More than any other pope in the modern age, he was a man of his time and place: the years of the Cold War and Eastern Europe. In such an environment, it's easy to develop hard and fast beliefs, especially when you have the institutional force of two millennia backing you up. It's not a coincidence that John Paul II, Ronald Reagan and Margaret Thatcher all took their place on the world stage at the same time. The world was easy to portray in black-and-white terms (as it is again today) -- them against us, evil vs. good. (Guess which side you're supposed to be on.) And urging them on was the firm conviction that the liberal excesses of the '60s and '70s -- including gay liberation -- needed to be corrected or, more accurately, wrung out of the system as vigorously as possible.

But unlike Reagan and Thatcher, John Paul II had absolute authority. Even Ron and Maggie couldn't claim to speak for God (although in Thatcher's case you have to believe she was tempted to lobby for the Supreme Being role for herself). And the result of that absolute authority is a church that slammed shut the window of change that was opened during the Second Vatican Council. For a brief moment, it was possible to look at the church as a progressive force for good in the world. Thanks to John Paul II, that moment is gone.

And thanks to John Paul II, homosexuality has risen to the top of the list of modern evils. This elevation was due to his own experiences. As a young man, he lived through the Nazi occupation of Poland. As a bishop and then cardinal, he endured the repression of a communist regime. Once communism fell, something else had to take its place as the ideology of evil. With the rise of gay rights, we were the easy pick to fill the void.

For the many (or few) of us oppressed gay asylees that now live in this country (or other more open minded countries) other than our motherlands, there is more to read on the link above - or for anyone with an open mind.

About 500 years after the inquisition, the catholic church apologized for being wrong about Galileu Galilei (remember him?; he said the Earth was round?); this apology happened a few years back (4 or 6 years ago), if I remember correctly. A little bit late, don't you think? Maybe in 500 years from now, the catholic church’s Pope will apologized for inspiring so many gay bashing deaths and violence for its (at least partially) ideology of hate to a section of the population of us in this world - yes ALL of us are human beings. I want to believe that Christ loved(s) all of us.

Vaya con Dios, Pope.
I really meant it - I am trying to be compassionate here, okay? Any mortal can be wrong at times or for most of his/her life, even the Pope and his church. I wish you had preached more love than hate against us.

Well you can make the same argument against God. Did God stop the war or the Soviets. This man was against the war on Iraq and lectured stupid Bush about it. He also told him that this war is immoral and racist. He was loved by Muslims and Jews for his sense of justice. This man must be great for Jews and Muslims to approve him!! The Vatican is a small country with no army, so he had no power. Remember, Nietsche once said that God was declared dead in the West and all what this man did was to revive God in this part of the world.

Noone is perfect. He is no God, and I agree with you his position against homosexuality was harsh, but this is his belief. I would not want to change any one's religious beliefs, but I would not like it when they impose their beliefs onto others. In other words, he had every right to believe whatever he wanted to believe, but because of his power, his beliefs sounded very oppressive in this issue. I would like you though to see the whole picture. At least, he did not ask to kill gays and lesbians like fanatic clerics in the Islamic world. He also did not ask for laws forbidding homsexuality. He basically stated his rejection of this life style, and again he was entitled to do that!
