Deadline for activation trip

HI, all

I got my GC last october. Now I'm planning the activation trip. My deadline is 31 March. Due to I'm little busy I don't have many free time to plan a trip and the best date is 20 March. It's only 10 days until my deadline, could it be dangerous. Did any of you find problems at the POE (dealys) in your activation? Is activation done at the airport or do they have to send some forms to somewhere to confirm the activation?

THANKS !!!!!

Once you cross the POE and got the stamp with the date of your enty into your passport you have activated the visa and have from then a 1-year valid temp. GC.

OK!! :D

Going to the Sates so close to the deadline scars me a little :S

I thank you Taz for many of my questions you have answered ;) THANKS!

You should definitely try and get over as soon as possible.

Why leave it so late? You shouldnt.

Who knows. You could get sick and have to miss the trip, family member could get ill and you could miss the trip - many things may make you miss the trip and then you will miss your deadline.

Just a thought. Not wise to plan to cut it so tight. If it was important to you then you should make the time sooner.

The problem is that I'm doing a master and I don't want to miss the most interesting classes. Also I have to plan my TOEFL and GRE examns (and its days of study) and by the end of march is when I wil have done this exams.

Moreover, this way I will have 6 extra month to come back to the States on July/Agust without problems at the POE.

Has somebody done the activation trip so close to the deadline?

if you received your Visa in October, your deadline is not March 09'.It will rather be April 09'.

My deadline is 30 march (it's on my passport) I would be going there 20-21 March, only 10 days before its expiration day.

Similar Situation

1st October 08' - 30th March 09' is correct. It's a bit of a gamble but you should be fine as long as you cross the POE before the expiry date.Ours(family and I) expire mid March but we intend to make our POE by first week of March. It's almost a similar situation as yours but i'm sure we'll be fine! We should just pray that no unforseen contigencies occur.
All the best of luck!

Delay to deadline

Is it right to say that if you want to delay moving to the US (economy reasons, etc), it is best to plan the activation close to the deadline so that you get an additional 6 months? Like Ronnin, he got his GC October '08, and then makes a trip on March '09. After activation at POE and return trip, he then will have till September '09 to go back to the US.

Does this sound right?

Thanks!

It's risky. I would take 5 months as an absolute maximum, but I can't decide on what someone else feels comfortable about. If you push it to a week before the 6 months ending, just remember what 9/11 did to global aviation or the London bomb scare in 2006 for that matter. I have worked in aviation for years and I've seen people with a simple ear infection get refused on a flight (it will cause permanent hearing disabilities if your drums tear under the pressure of the cabin). An ear infection alone will take more than a week to clear up.

You can always apply for a reentry permit if you have unfinished business at home.

OK. You have scared me. I'll go by the end of february ;)

I think that's the best to avoid some inconveniences. The problem will be the next time I go there. It will have passed 5 months (close to 6).

That's not a problem.

There is no concept such as GC "activation". If he enters the US and then promptly leaves for five months, his GC can be taken away on the grounds that he never established residence in the United States.

So the question comes back to how long can you prolong migrating to the US if say your interview is in December and you've passed it?

Please advise, thanks!

HI! I have read many times people going to States for a few days to do the "activation trip" (or just to avoid the expiration deadline). This is just to have more than 6 month before going there.

In my case, I got my permit on october '08 and my classes don't finish until June '09. Moreover, I will be doing my Master in an American University (it also would show that I intend to live in the States)

The only way to go to the States with my studies finished is doing the "activation trip" trick. I'm sure I'm not the first doing that due to university. Isn't it???
