Folks, can you suggest what we should do in our situation. Our interview is scheduled on April 18th & my wife is planning to go out of the country to India on May 12 for 4 months.

If we show her iterinary & request the Oath before that time, will it taken negatively by the officer for any reason. Please give me your opinion on how to convince the officer to schedule our oath ASAP.

Thanks in advance.

This falls in the category of "it depends if you are assigned an understanding IO". Personally I don't think I'd feel comfortable volunteering that I was planning to take a 4 month trip back to my old country. The easiest (but not necessarily cheapest) solution would simply be to say nothing and fly back for oath.

If the appointment does arrive while she is away, you could always try rescheduling then, but that too has its problems. Tough call.

If she is approved on 18th, she may have same day oath if your disctrict office does that. Otherwise it is usually 2 weeks.

You can apply immediately after the oath for passport, again you have to go directly to get it immediately if your wife wants to fly on 12th may.

Is it possible to schedule the oath date at the time of the interview? In our case, we would need later dates for the oath rather than the earlier ones. It would be nice if I can avoid the hassle of rescheduling by mail etc.

Thanks in advance -- DL

It depends on the DO (for example, Dallas does not do same day oaths) and on whether everything goes well.

No, I wouldn't bring it up to the IO during the interview unless the IO somehow brings it up. You also need to realize that both the physical presence and continuous residency rules must be met on the day of the oath.

If you can't get back, have someone open your mail and be ready to send a request for rescheduling.
