Currently working on TN, applying for new TN

Hi,

I'm currently in the US working on a TN status, and will be heading to a POE to apply for a new work permit for my new employer. I had a call with the immigration attorneys that are taking care of my case, but they alluded that I would likely have to terminate my current employment to obtain my new permit.

Could someone kindly share their experiences with this? I feel rather unsafe with their suggestion, and would like to give my two weeks notice only once after I get my new TN. (both roles are full-time employment).

Thanks!

Their advice is incorrect, as you can hold multiple TNs at the same time. Merely advide border that you will be keeping the first TN while starting to work at the second. This is done all the time, and is, as you say, the safest thing to do, and allows you to give notice.

I think you can have multiple TN as nelsona pointed out. However you may need to know how many hours / week you can work. For example how a person can keep two or three jobs each paying full time salary? I think full time means 40 hours / week. Although it is HR department related thing. Please be careful while handling HR people in any company.

This can asked at the border by the visa officer. So you have to keep your mathematics accurate (in your mind). Please search how many total hours a person can work on TN.

Just state that you will be giving notice in a few weeks (or when the TN expires) and this will be sufficient.
Total hours is not an issue.

TN status does not require full-time employment. Part-time employment is acceptable.

Border officers don't care about how you will juggle scheduling multiple jobs. They leave it up to you to sort out with your respective employers.

I have held simultaneous TN permits for 2 employers, and never once have I been asked about my work hours.
