Hello All,

I am a Doctor from India. I have done MBBS from India in 1997, worked for a private hospital in Delhi for almost 2 years then worked for Govt. Hospital for 5 years. Then I left the job and did M.Tech in Bio- Science from IIT, afterwards I am not working. I am thinking to take USMLE exams. specially I am preparing for step 1 and step 2 simultaneously. I am planning to take both within 6 - 9 months.
I am wondering if there is any chance my visa for CS would get rejected ? Do people have any experience with it. What are all the chances of getting rejected and what basis could they reject it.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks in Advance.

I do not have experience myself, but just for discussion waiting for others feedback. If you pass step1 and 2 overseas, the chance to get visa for CS, step3 and interviews is very high. But if you want to start with the CS (which is allowed by the ECFMG), I think your chance to get the visa is low. You should convince the people in consulate that you are coming to do CS and by clearing step1 and 2 there, you will have a good argument to prove that. One of my friends got the visa in the same day and came three times to the US (CS, step3 and interviews) before he matched 2 years ago. He went back to get the J and stuck for 5 months before giving him the J.

Thanks mmed,

As a matter of fact I am thinking to take CS first. It would be very unfortunate if they would deny me visa becuase i haven't cleared step 1 and step2 CK yet. Would you know how long it would take to clear all of them. Is it possible I can do step 1 and step 2 CK in 3 months ?

It depends to great extent on many factors; how you organize yourself in study, what materials you are using, what are your grades in medical school, if you are recent or old graduate (the recent the better), .......etc. Some prepare themselfes for step1 and 2 at the same time (including myself) others prefer to start with step1 or step2 and so on. There are many materials out there and many simulating exams to know where you stand. I think you will find much help in "studendoctor forum". If you devote yourself totally to study you can clear both steps in 2-3 months supposed you have strong background. The other point is not just passing the exams, how much score you will get and what specialty you want. Remember you will be a visa holder with very minimal chance to secure a position especially with scores less than 85-90 in both steps. Start with step1 and 2 to be familliar with many things which will help in CS.
