criminal speeding ticket

Received a criminal speeding ticket for driving over 20 miles. Have involved a lawyer to contest this. As per laws this will be a Class 3 misdemeanor if convicted and will have to pay fines and points on license. I will be eligible for citizenship filing in next 4 mos. No prior criminal records of any kind, though have had 2 speeding tickets in last 9 years, never had any points on the license. Will this affect my citizenship filing, should I delay the filing for next couple of years. Thanks.

If this is your only offense I don't see it as an issue for your naturalization eligibility. Just disclose it on the application and bring the court document/proof of payment to the interview.

what is a "criminal speeding ticket"?? (is it because it is over 20 miles?)

I think you didnt need a lawyer. You could go to the court and get the charges reduced.(pay some fine). I did so, I had ticket for over 15 miles, my charge was reduced. and I had to pay $245 fine.

anyways, if it is just speeding and not DUI/DWI then you should be fine.

All the best.

Two options:

1. Fight it.
2. Pay it.

I would go with number one (1). Especially so close to filing the N-400.
Besides it is going to cost you one way or the other.- :)

I had about 10 speeding + carpool violation + stop sign + failure to obey posted signs tickets dating back from 2001. I put them all down on the N-400 and wrote down that I paid all of them and that the fines were never more then $500 dollars. I also brought in a letter from my local court house saying that I didn't have a criminal record/ problems with the law. That worked out, the CIS officer asked me if I had any other tickets after the last one I wrote down, I didn't.

You should be ok, put the ticket down on the N-400, and i would just pay the ticket cuz if you fight it it might cost more if you don't win.

I got my passport last week btw.
