credit history

I was told today that I owed some apartment complex money ($1300) 6 years ago in Virginia. It is on my credit report as dispute. Basically I broke the lease without paying.

Could you tell me
(1) Does it affect my citizenship application?
(2) What kind of action landlord could take? Is there any arrest warrant or others?

Thanks.

At least as a routine, the INS does not check into your
creditr history. On N-400 form, they only ask if you
owe any child support but no other debts is mentioned.

As arrest warrant, the landlord should go to court
first. The court make a ruling. If you still refuse to pay.
you can be arrested for contemt of court.

Owning debets itself is not a cause for jail.
It was in Dickens's times in England.

thanks

that is good news. thanks.
i wrote a check on reletting fee and marked on it saying: if you cash it, the rest is waived. (In VA, they ask for reletting fee Plus rent till they find other ones moving in.) They cashed the check. Later collecting agency called me and I mailed them the copy of the check. I never heard anything from them since then. Today, my future landlord told me because it is shown on my credit histroy. she said that this record will be expire after 7 years. It has benn 6 years.

my question is:
(1) is there any "arrest warrant" on me which I am not aware of because of this?
(2) what old landlord could do other than reporting to credit agency?
(3) what should I do?

thanks.

The landlord can go to court to file a suit. The judge
will send you a summon. If you refuse to go to court,
the judge will issue an arrest warrant for contempt
of court. If you go to court, there will be a trial.
The judge will make a ruling. If the ruling is you
don't have to pay, then you are fine. If the ruling
is that you have to pay, then you have to pay.
If you refuse to follow the court ruling, then the
landlord can call police to have you arrested.

In fact, if thereis a court order/ruling, your landlord
may even freeze your bank account, garner your wages,
etc.

As for whether an arrest warrant has already been
issued for you in your absense, you need to check out
with your landlord, ask if he went to court. You can also
check out with police in Virginia, etc.
