Can't tell because it varies greatly from states to states.. Keep in mind that the USA is not realy a country, more like a group of countries (states), so laws, schools, living costs... varies greatly, best to ask cost of living in a particular state

Even in a certain state the cost varies greatly especially the cost of housing. The more people that want to live in a place and the nicer the weather in general the higher the cost. In a big city like NY or LA or San Fran you can pay millions for a very old very small home. In the places far away from a city and jobs you can buy huge homes with land for under 100k. Hawaii as a state is very expensive as most things are imported. Check this to get some ideas http://www.bankrate.com/calculators/mortgages/moving-cost-of-living-calculator.aspx?ec_id=m1025820&ef_id=oBRPQSofDyAAAANM:20120313042724:s http://www.cityrating.com/costofliving.asp

Medical costs are crippling even for US Citizens as can be the cost of a car or public transportation.

Cars are very cheap compared to most other places so do public transportations compared to places like europe... But keep in mind that appart from a few cities like Boston, New york & Washington DC, public transportation are almost non existant & seeing the size of the cities (especialy southern ones) you need a car to go anywhere... so each familly member need a car because you can't just walk, the cities too large

This is true. Many of my American family members/friends say the same thing. You pretty much need a job that has good healthcare benefits, unfortunately this means that as an employee you are rather tied in to that job. Leaving or getting made redundant will not only mean you have no health coverage, but your family dependants too will lose theirs.

Healthcare costs is the number one reason for financial bankruptcy filings in the United States, even if you have your own insurance it's usually not enough to cover the excess or co-pay that could run into hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If I ever need surgery or something long term I'll get a re-entry permit, (unless it's an acute emergency) fly back to the UK and be treated there, even if I have to pay. The cost in England is a fraction of what it is the United States' and the treatment vastly superior from what I've seen.

I'll also have to investigate what the quality and cost of entering Canada as a Commonwealth Citizen for treatment is too.

My son ( an adult) had an emergency appendectomy and the bill was just short of 100,000. Lucky he is a USC and the government helped but he still had a huge bill that took years to pay off.

$100 000... wow, no wonder why many people die young because of the lack of medical affordability

I am not sure what unfounded horror stories you refer to. My son's story is fact. Like many young uninsured people he thought his pain was some bad food and didn't seek help until after it ruptured and that lead to a long recovery with complications. His stay in the hospital was over a month. That is not cheap and can be a dream breaker
