Conversion of J1 to J2 and vice versa

Can I change my visa from J1 to J2 and my dependent change from J2 to J1.

Do we have to go back to home country before changing new status?

If you are subject to INA 212(e) 2Y HRR you are not eligible to change your visa status, inside the United States, from J to any other nonimmigrant classification except A or G. For your case see http://www.immigration.com/faq/jvisa.html:
