Continuous Residency - Would appreciate feedback

Just joined the forum, so hello to everyone on this thread. I would appreciate advice.

I've been in the USA with my wife since 12/1/2008. We've had 700 days out of the country. We had one trip to Australia that lasted 61 days to sort out family a health issue with an elderly parent. Five days after our return to the USA my wife had tragic news that her brother had passed away (suicide). We left the next day for the UK. Long story short - we remained in the UK for 154 days as my wife's mother was in need of support for this extended period.

We recently decided to apply for citizenship. After reading about continuous residency I realize we may run into a bit of trouble, specifically in relation to this short return of six days to the USA between the two trips described above.

Anyone have experience or know more about how the IO view continuous residency.

Well, 700 is a lot of days. What do your other trips look like?

To be safe, take proof of the family emergencies if you can, but only volunteer it if asked. But, they may not even ask you about your trips. It all depends on the interviewer.

Requirement is that you had to be physically in the country for 30 months out of the 60 months (5 years). So nothing wrong with your trips as you never left >6 month. You are perfectly fine and everything else is not their business.

The particular travels that you mention shouldn't give you any problem at all as neither of those times you left for more than 6 months. But they don't add up to 700 days so I wonder how your other absences look.

Anyway, when it comes to the particular absences you mention, as cafeconleche said, take proof of what happened to your wife's brother just in case. Perhaps a death certificate or something similar.
