Hi,
I will be visiting India for my marriage in Dec. 2002 and plan to get my wife here along with me after her H4 visa is stamped. My question is, which Consulate should my spouse visit/apply to get the H4 stamping. The reason I ask is, I got my H1B visa issued for the first time from Chennai (I was working at Hyderabad before coming to US).
Thereafter, last month I got my visa revalidated from Delhi. But my fiancee is a resident of Orissa which comes under the Calcutta embassy region/zone. So from past experiences could someone please let me know if it would be better to visit Delhi (since that is where I had my visa revalidated and that too after running into 221(g) issues and an interview) or should I visit Calcutta because Orissa is under their zone. Or does it matter at all ??

Any inputs around this will be really appreciated and helpful.
Thanks,
Chickoo.

have exactly the same case

along with all the 221 (g) hassles
visa from delhi
wife from blr
have applied in chennai
after doing some research on my own - it seems that it really does not matter
will let you know as and when the H4 visa comes through

calcutta

I am from Orissa but I had my H1b stamping in Bombay becoz I was working in Bombay. After getting married in Orissa my wife got her H4 stamped in Calcutta as she studied in Orissa. So I guess Calcutta would be the best & safest option for you.

H4 visa approved

got the approval from Chennai
7 days end to end
no hassles
also got the passport endorsed from blr - 1 day - no travel agent
plus one more day because there was no power in blr office
endorsement meant: writing a phrase ' please read the name of the spouse as ****'
No surname change (that was taking 10 days)

H4 visa -- appointment or dropbox ?

Thanks for the replies/information (desi_in_bayarea, richardstevens).

Was wondering if anybody had visited the Calcutta consulate recently. Is it possible to set up an appointment directly, without using drop box. Is that a good idea ?
And secondly, if it is a direct appointment, is it necessary/mandatory/better for the principal H1-B holder to be present with spouse during appointment/interview for the H4 visa.

Thank you.

RichardStevens - A small clarification. Should the passport office endorsing the spouse's name be the same one that issued the passport, any idea? Thanks.

H4 visa -- name endorsement.

Hi,
Just wanted to share the reply I received from the Calcutta Consulate to my question about endorsing my name on wife's PP.

Dear sir,
This is to inform you that it is mandatory to have husband's name
endorsed
on the wife's passport.

Hope the above information is helpful to you.
