Confusion Regarding name of Petitioner

Hi Everyone,

I am relatively new to this thread, so please bear with me if I violate any rules.

I married my wife (US citizen) 3 months ago and am applying for AOS. However, while filling out the forms, I am facing this confusion: Wherever it asks for my wife's name, what should she put as her "Last Name"? Her maiden name (i.e. before marriage) or her new name (after marriage)? She changed her last name in her DL and SSN card but not on her passport.

I really am in a rush to apply, so if you could suggest anything other than changing name in her passport (which might take few weeks), I'll be very thankful.

Thanks

Regards,

She started using her new last name on official documents, so from this point forward her married name is considered to be her official legal name. Write her married name wherever it asks for her name, unless the question specifically asks for her maiden name or "other names used".

She should get her passport changed before the interview, which shouldn't a problem since the passport is usually delivered in less than a month, whereas the interview will be at least 2 months, probably 3-5 months after you file for AOS.

Thanks Jackolantern!
Just one question though: When I send the AOS packet to chicago Lockbox, I will be sending a copy of her passport page and no other identity. Thus, dont you think there will be inconsistency in name in the forms and passport?
Thanks again.

The marriage certificate will be a bridging document between the maiden name in PP and married name elsewhere. Is needless worrying a vocation or affliction? :p

Oh okay. Thanks a lot.
Regarding worrying, its just that I see lot of people telling their stories and how it takes a long time if something goes wrong. Thats why I wanted to be doubly sure.

Anyways, Thanks a lot for your help. :)

Marriage certificate in which your wife's name is changed ( after the marriage) will stand to erase any queries regarding it. Just write down her maiden name if it is asked particularly. As suggested by the others, your wife should go in for a change of her name on her US passport.
