What does \'using your EAD\' mean ? I have and EAD for the past 6 months and my H1 is still valid till feb next year. MUST I let INS know that I am going to be using my EAD from now on ? Are there any forms to do this ?

As far as I know, you\'re not actually "using" your EAD until you\'ve done something to nullify your H1 status. E.g. you work for another employer without applying for a 2nd H1 through that employer - this would normally meant breaking the rules of your H1 which would make you go out of status, but with your EAD it\'ll be a change of status to Adjustee instead. I formally nullified my H1 when I decided not to extend the 2nd term (last 3 years of the 6 year term) and notified my employer whom got a xerox copy of my EAD card.

As Kehlar said, you will be using your EAD if you seek open market employment or continue to work after H-1B has expired. You must send a copy of your EAD to your employer so that they may update your I-9 filling with them. (I-9 is not sent to INS, it is just kept in your employee file).
