Confused about visa stamping

After reading most of the postings on this website, I realize how ignorant I am about immigration rules. My lawyer is horrible and has not informed me on any of these things that I have read so far. What is H1-B stamping at Canada or Mexico? Is that what I need to get before leaving the US to guarantee that I can return? Is there a website that I can look up for more info? I've been afraid to leave the country to visit my family (in Indonesia) for fear that I won't be allowed to return. Would love to know more about this! Thanks.
 
If you are a Alien who did F1 and is now working as H1, yes you need to go to canada (mexico is out of the picture for H1s now), which is the best consulate to get H1 stamping. If you give more information about your current status , more users will give you productive ideas.
