Confused About AOS

My mother recieved an Ib1 visa and as her child I have recieved and Ib3, which is a marriage based immigrant visa. I was reading some stuff about AOS and I am very confused. Can someone who has recieved an immigrant visa but has not yet entered the US file AOS? Or is it true that because it is an immigrant visa that one doesn't need to file AOS? My last question is my visa expires before the end of this year, a day before my 21 birthay, if I file AOS upon entry into the US and then turn 21 will I age out even though my mom married my stepfather long before I turned 18? Thanks!
 
On the day you are admitted into the US with an immigrant visa, you immediately become a permanent resident and no AOS is required.
