My H-1 visa stamp is expiring on Dec 01 2003. I have a 797 valid till June 2006, and a passport valid till Sept 2004. If I travel abroad and come back in mid November, is the fact that I have only a couple of weeks on my Visa stamp pose a problem? (Also, the stamp has my old employer's name on it)

You should be fine. Just make sure you have/show the new I-797 approval notice to the POE inspector and have him mark the I-94 validity date through the I-797 approval date

If your passport expires in Sept 2004, the inspector at POE might give you I-94 until passport validity. It happened to me once.
I had a visa and I-797 valid much longer but my passport was expiring in 2 weeks. I got I-94 for only 2 weeks and I had to get it corrected once i got my new passport.

I will probably get a new passport before that, so I am not worried about dates on I94 so much as about a possible denial of entry.

Also, my visa stamp is from a previous employer, and the I797 is for my current job. I read elsewhere on immigration.com that someone was put on a plane because they had a stamp with previous employer's name on it. It was strange because DOS website clearly states that you don't need another stamp just because you changed employers.
