Coming 245(i) extention

I was recently told (by a reliable source) that there's an upcoming "extention" to 245(i) - basically an ammendment allowing illigals who submit their application till certain date (presumably Dec02) to be eligable for 245(i). This would create another "bottleneck" for the ppl that submit LC after this date.

Q1: Any comments?

Q2: Was there any "extention" like this in past? During 2002? Meaning once Apr01 backlogs are hopefully over, is there going to be another backlog (from Apr01 to Nov02 period)?

May be

Hexamon,

Just a thought: may be they passed this new regulation extending H-1b for more than 6 years if your LC is pending for more than 365 days in anticipation of creating a new mess due to passing of another 245(i) extension in the near future.

It all started in Summer 2001...
The legislation in question is called the Section 245i Extension Bill.

An extension of Section 245i was up for a vote on September 11. As a result of the terrorist attacks, the vote was deferred and the 245i extension died.

Again on March 12 2002, the House of Representatives passed HR 1885, a bill that would temporarily restore section 245(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act.

I stop following 245i extension issue after March. I guess after yesterday's US Congress election result we should watch this more carefully.

Similar Bill in Senate:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
H. Res. 365, Enhanced Border Security and Visa Entry Reform Act of 2002 S. 778, Section 245(i) Extension Act of 2001 S. 2493, Uniting Families Act of 2002
While H. Res. 365 contains important border security measures, this legislation includes an extension of Section 245(i) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which permits illegal aliens to remain in the United States. On March 12, the House passed the resolution on suspension (no amendments and limited debate) 275 to 137 with 22 not voting (Roll Call Vote 53). Extension of 245(i), or amnesty, is also in both S. 778 and S. 2493. Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle plans to bring an amnesty bill to the Senate floor for debate and a vote, but it has not yet been scheduled.
