College status after applying for asylum

Dear friends,

I will be applying for asylum shortly but right now I am attending a community college. What will be my status like once I apply for asylum and while it is pending? Will I be able to temporarily stop attending college (I don't think I will be able to pay tuition while my case is pending) and then resume my college attendance after any case decision is made?

you will lose the student visa if you stop attending college. if you lost your asylum case, then you will be in a bad situation. but if your asylum got granted then you can attend college again as a resident "with financial aid too"

If I don't stop attending college, how will my asylum application affect my current F-1 status and any future legal statuses or their approval?

wait.. my immigration lawyer told me that the fact that I apply for asylum does not affect my current status in no way or my ability to later apply for and receive any other status, whatever the outcome of the asylum case is (denied or approved). How will college find out about my asylum application anyway? And hat laws or official documents is your answer based on? I would like to take a look at them that's why I started this topic.

yes, true, college has nothing to do with your asylum application, sorry for not being clear, they will only report you to immigration if you will stop attending.

Even if college knew about your asylum application, it is nothing to them at all... just don't stop attending.

after asylum approval you will be considered a resident student "not international student" and you will be eligible for financial aid too.

good luck

you're still talking about the scenario where I quit college right? but if I don't quit college and lose asylum case, I'm still ok, right?

yes, as long as u take enough credits, achieve the required scores and pay ur fees, you should be fine. basically, forget about ur asylum application, think that ur still on ur student visa and u don't want to lose ur status. do that, and if the asylum officer denies ur case and ur application also gets denied after ur rebuttal to their notice of intent to deny, you ill have no immigration problems and ur status will be reinstated back to F1. this is, however, only if you want that to happen! if u want ur case to be referred to the immigration judge, you have to be out of status. the international center at ur school should be able o help u with all of this.
