Clueless about applying for Citizenship

My wife and I have crossed our 5-year anniversary of being US permanent residents. We would like to apply to become citizens now.

1. Do most people apply on their own or does it make sense to use a lawyer's services?

2. Are there things we should do before filling out the N400 form and sending it with the fees?

Any advice for beginners/newbies would be much appreciated. Thanks

1. Most do it on their own. If your case is strait simple with no complications, you can easily file yourself.
