Claiming Parents as dependents

can I claim my in-laws as dependent when filing our taxes? They have been staying with us for over a year and we applied for their green card last year. Currently waiting for the approval. They don’t have any income.

Thanks.

If their income was less than $4400 last year, you provided more than half their support that year, and they do not file taxes jointly, you can claim them as dependent.

I will be in a similar state next year and I wonder if they have property, assets and income in the home country, does it indirectly put me into other obligations to report? I am not worried about having to pay taxes for foreign assets but the paper work quagmire that it will result into and doing everything legally right. Remember the world is getting small and Uncle Sam has ears everywhere.
