I have been married for 6 years. I have been a permanent resident for 2 complete years. We have a 4 years old son together. When I can file for citizenship and if I plan to divorce before or after filing for citizenship what impact should have on my status. If I divorce and didnot file for citezenship could i still be able to renew my green card.thanks

since you are already a gc holder it is ok

you can do whatever you want and it won't affect citizenship status.

the only things that will affect it are getting in trouble with the law and leaving the country too long.

:) :) :)re Citizenship

:) THANKS FOR QUICK RESPONSE. One more Question, so I can go ahead and do the divorce, and do I still need someone to sponsor for me? :) :) :)

Balbhandari, Hi!
Divorce is not a crime in this country. You are free to do as you wish.
You do not need another sponsor. The only reason some people decide to drag out the divorces for another year or two is because if you stay married to US citizen you are eligible to apply for the citizenship after 3 years of being permanent resident, providing you were married to the same person, who sponsored you, for those three years.
If you divorce – then you’ll be eligible to apply for the citizenship after 5 years of PR.
But whatever you choose to do – apply for citizenship or renew your Green Card you DO NOT need your current husband or anybody else to sign anything for you anymore.
It is going to be your application and your marital status won’t affect the final decision.
Hope I answered your questions.
