I am very new to this process. I might have very dumb questions...
Eagerly waiting for response!!!

I got my GC in 2001 and I will complete my 5 yrs in March 2006. I thinking of applying GC's for my parents...Hence I want to get stared with citizen applicaiton process soon.

-How soon can you take Citizenship exam?
-Where do you have to take it?
-How is this different from interview?
-Can anyone give me big picture of this overall N400 application process please.

What do you mean by DCF?? I read about this on this forums somewhere.

citizenship exam? medical exam? i am not aware of naturalization requires medical exam.

overall n400 application process

1. download form / instruction (n400 related) from USCIS
2. fill out form. send the required documents which listed on the instruction / form along with pictures and fee
3. you will receive the notice of action of your application. it will show your priority date. you will not be interviewed until your priority date becomes current (however, it is not true but we go with the flow for now).
4. you will recieve another notice of action for your finger print. it lists the time and date and place for your finger print appointment
5. FBI will process your finger print and do a name check
6. wait to get your interview notice
7. interview
7.a. depending on the result. you might be required to send more evidence. or wait for the name check to be cleared. it can be for few months or few years waiting. who knows.
8. wait for your oath notice
9. happy to be a citizen of united states.

Big pciture : - 90 days before your 5 year anniversary send your N400 form in with the fee and other requested info such as copy of green card.

You will get called for fingerprints. THen you will get called for interview , at the interview you will do a verbal test - this is the citzenship exam you mention; you will be asked questions out of a standrd list of 100 questions, ansd they will verify the information in your n400 with you.

After the interview you will ( if you pass) take oath the same day or some weeks later depending on location and then you will be a citzen. THen you can sponsor your parents.

The time between sending your N400 to getting the oath will be from 4 months 18 months depening on your local processing times.

That is a big picture description. Lots of posts and the uscis web site give lots more details.
