I have a Greencard (employment based)

After how many years after getting Greencard will I be able to apply for Citizenship?
After how many years after getting Greencard will I be eligible to become a Citizen?

You can apply for citizenship after 5 years (minus 90 days) from the day date shown on your greeb card.

If you meet the requirements, you can apply 5 years -90 days from the date your Green card was issued. Once you apply for citizenship, the process to become a citizen can take anywhere from 6 months to over 1 year depending on your District office and individual case processing issues (ie. name check delays).

Make it 2 to 3 years if you are in namecheck

One correction to bobsmyth's reply..

It will take upto 3 years if you are stuck in namecheck.

I am preparing myself to wait upto end of 2010.

There's been instances of applications pending over 3 years due to name check delays, hence my open ended reply of "over 1 year".

Isn't there a new USCIS/immigration law/rule that states if the namecheck exceeds a period of 180 days, then, where an application would have normally been approved, they will approve it and then finish the namecheck later? Saw something about this about a week or so ago.

The 2/4/08 USCIS memo you are referring to doesn't apply to naturalization cases.

Friends

Thanks a lot for your replies.
What does the name check actually involve .. I presume it is like finger printing and FBI verification prior to Greencard.
I alsp presume it is something that is automatically triggered when you apply for Citizenship.

Eagerly waiting for your replies.

Basically they run your name and a mix of variations (Last name, first name - first name, last name, different spelling, etc) through their database to see, if there is a match. The more common your name is, the more likely it is there is a match. Possible matches go through manual review and that is what takes time.
