Hello folks,

I was wondering if someone could offer me some advise in citizenship application requirements.

I lived continously on a green card in the US from 1987 to 1996 and then in 1996 went abroad to pursue studies. I was provided a re-entry permit I-327 (kept renewing it till 2009) in 1996 and visited the US every year for 2 weeks to keep everything valid. I have been living continuously in the US since 2008, after I graduated. Does anyone know if I can file for US citizenship? Will they take into account my continuous stay from 1987 to 1996 or do they look at only the most recent 5 years. I see only a recent 5 year history being questioned on the US citizenship form.

Please advise.

You were studying abroad from 1996 all the way until 2008? And they kept renewing your reentry permit over and over for 12 years? Wow.

Anyway, to answer your question: for continuous residence they look at a rolling window of the last 5 years -- the 5 years immediately before you applied, the 5 years immediately before your interview, and the 5 years immediately before your oath. It doesn't matter if you lived continuously in the US for 40 years before that; you have to qualify based on the most recent 5 years.
