I and my husband had our interview recently. We both have different last names.

I got my GC thru my husband.

After the interview I was told CIA check still pending.

My husband finished OATH same day.....

Does anybody have similar experience....how long does CIA check take and what is the flow of info....?

Can I travel outside the USA...(Canada, India etc) ?


If I change my residence what are the repurcussions besides filing for change of address since I am still GC.

Do you have a muslim-sounding last name?

In any case, it's surprising because the general consensus is that lengthy checks are not performed for women....

Address changes may cause some delay...

You can travel with your GC but have someone keep a look out for a letter in your mail to make sure you don't miss your Oath ceremony...if you are out of town, you will need to have someone reschedule your Oath ceremony for you...

Does it make a difference to have a female muslim name?

My question is what kind of security check do they do after the successful interview and specially in priyankas's situation where husband was granted Oath letter and wife not?

Please share your experience.
 
There is a lot of confusion on this subject - the US Dept. Of State website states that no one will be called for an interview unless all their checks are complete....but if that were the case, then priyankas' approval should have been granted on the spot...

Assuming there is some sort of backlog in these checks...I don't think that they initiate any checks after the interview, it's just that priyankas' check initiated before the interview has not completed yet...

I'm also not sure about the topic of this thread - CIA Check? I thought the only checks done were by the FBI...a fingerprint check (only takes one day) followed by a name check (timeline varies on this one)...

There is also confusion on who the checks are done for...some people say checks are not done for women, some people say checks are done for everyone...but regardless of whether you are male or female, again, the general consensus is that having a muslim-sounding first and/or last name may delay the process...

I have my interview in Garden City in a few months...I will update everyone once that's done, since I have a female Indian name (first and last name) - let's see what happens...

Priyankas, I don't think it will hurt to try and contact the FBI (numbers are posted on other threads in this forum) to try and find the status of your name check...and there is hope - after interview, it took my mom almost 10 months to get her oath letter - but she got it!

Does your mom has a female muslim name? Did you get any help (e.g Congressman) to get the Oath letter for your mom?

I agree you about the topic of this thread. I don't think so CIA does your name check. I think its the fbi who does name check for you.

Nope my mom doesn't have a muslim first or last name...

I asked my mom today how she ended up getting the Oath letter and this is what she told me...

What happened to my mom was what happened to someone else in this forum - they put her folder in some temporary location and it was forgotten about...

She was extremely lucky because the INS case worker that happened to be cleaning out the temporary files (they were throwing them out!) KNEW my mom, and when he recognized the name he told his superior that this file was an active pending case and not to be thrown out!!!

Once they reactivated the file, my mom got her Oath letter within 6 weeks...

I am not saying you need a friend in the INS :D Other people in this forum have indicated that their file was put in some temporary location and they were able to call USCIS and straighten it out...check out this thread...

Priyankas, it might be worth a shot to follow the procedure MTG did...

I am not sure what my mom would have done in case her friend didn't see the file...she probably would have contacted a lawyer and proceeded via the courts...

It took me approx a year after the finger printing to get interview letter.


I did not know till now but my husband came across a place on the internet in neighbouring country (west of India) where they make fighter jets and the place has the same last name as mine.

Also I remember clearly the interviewer mentioning that it was CIA name check that was pending. On asking her how long it would take she replied "You would know that if you know someone in the CIA"


This happened in Newark office.

Now it doesn't matter if I changed my last name to my husband's last name as they go by the birth name. I am a hindu and my first name and last name are Punjabi/Sindhi. I have been in USA for more than 10 years.

Carl Shusterman: The FBI lets the INS know whether you are a criminal in the CIA informs them whether you are a terrorist. The INS checks with both agencies when you apply for residence and again when you apply for naturalization.

Received email today that my namecheck has finally been done.

It was initiated on Jan 21st 2003 and completed on Jan 28th 2005.

Now do I wait or tell my attorney to ask Newark for a fingerprint date. I think I have waited enuf....

Also how long does the computers in Local office take to update....any ideas

Congratulations! Based on reading the posts here, Local District Office should update your record in two to three weeks. It is really your call to ask the attorney or not. I would say wait for atleast TWO weeks.

Did fbi e-mailed you or CIA? When did you e-mail them? Please list the detail and e-mail address you used.

Good luck and hope you recieve your letter soon. :)
 
I emailed FBI at FBINNCP@ic.fbi.gov on Oct 17th 2004.

I was fingerprinted in Jan 2003 and interviewed in Jan 2004.

I distinctly remember the interview officer said that it was CIA name check which was pending.

You can either tell your attorney to get an FP appnt for you, or you can get it in person if you go to your District Office (even if your record has not been updated yet in DO). You might also be able to get an appnt by calling the 800 number.
 
Indian names

what does that mean. Muslim names can be Indian names too or maybe you guys mean hindu names.

BTW, there is no such thing as a CIA check for N-400 petitioner.

I got a voicemail from my Senator's lawyer on Friday saying that FBI name check is done....but CIA name check is still pending.....and he said that it should be done in 60-90 days.

What do I make of this ????

P.S. I had asked the Senator's lawyer to enquire with BCIS before I received a fax from the FBI saying name check is complete... :mad:
 
wow you tracked this thread down after a year!

Dunno much about CIA checks except that I saw an email id for status inquiries in this forum not too long ago
