Hi to all the CP Gods -

I am doing my CP with my wife on Mar 20 in Chennai and after reading all
the discussions, I wanted to clarify/confirm a few things,

1) The current job I have is my second job. I have an experience letter
from the first (used in LC) and an employment letter from the second
stating an intention to continue employment. Do I need to get a diff
experience letter from my current boss ?

2.1) Since I filed taxes electronically for 98, 99 and 00, I just took POs
of the PDF files I have from \'Turbo Tax on the Web\'. Is this sufficient
or do I need tax transcripts ?

2.2) If I need tax transcripts, do I need them from my state also (CA) ?

3) Do I need a \'sailing permit\' at all ? If so, where do I get it ?
I live in Sunnyvale, CA, so could I get this in the San Jose IRS
office ? Or an phone numbers will be helpful.

4) I have the last 3 months bank statements, Do I need to get a letter
from the bank as well. Presently my wife\'s I-134 states only my salary
as the basis for my supporting her. My lawyer says that this is more
than enough (and I dont have to state bank balances).

5) Do I need to get our passports changed to indicate the \'married\' status
or any changes like that ? She is using her maiden name to apply for GC.

6) I got PCCs from Indian consulate, SF for me and my wife. But my wife
actually got her passport 4 months ago (a month before our marriage,
and a month an a half before she entered the US). Since she has been
in the US for such a short time, should I get a PCC for local passport
office also (the local police station not reqd as passport is recent) ?

My wife just left for the US a couple of days ago and so she has time
to get this, but it would still be painful as it involves traveling.

7) Finally, do I need to get a draft for Blue Dart or is cash enough here ?
If so, how much ? Someone mentioned Rs. 350. Just wanted to confirm.

Thanx in advance,
- ckmon

Answers

1. Current employer exp. letter not required as the verification letter has the start date.

2. Tax Transcripts are better. They are easy to get Call 800-729-1040 and follow the propts. Tax returns are not required if you can Transcripts.

3. Sailing Permit is not required for CP. Technically Sailing permits are required each time you go out of the country. If you have taken last time yopu visited India, you take this time too. I did not take them.

4. 3 mos. statements are enough.

5. Her last name change in the Passport is recommended to reflect the marraige.

6. I think Local not required for her. Verify.

7. Get a draft for Rs. 350 (if no Chidren. Add Rs. 50 for each child.)

Good Luck.

Just called the chennai consulate number 44-811-2060.

Thanx for the answers, Superman. Just called the consulate and talked
to the phone lady.

She tells me that since my wife was in the US only for 3 months (which
is less than 6 months), she has to get a PCC for local passport office
and also the local police sttn. But the latter is not required as her passport was issued less than 6 months ago. I already got a PCC for her from the Indian Consulate in SFO, but is not enough apparently.

Also she tells that you dont have to change the passport to indicate
that she is married etc. The marriage certificate is required and is
enough to establish marriage.

Regarding tax returns for past 3 years, she says that tax transcripts
ARE REQUIRED, and copies of tax returns wont do - although I am not sure if she understands the difference.

Tax Transripts and Sailing Permit

Just went and got my tax transcripts - fed and CA - (easy 2 hrs job).

Federal Tax Transripts (Definitely need them - see prev post)
----------------------
Federal Tax Office @ 55 S. Market St. (in the
ground floor even before you enter the huge building).
Just need to give your SSN - Also take current year
W2 and copies of previous year tax returns if any (
actually you dont need the latter really as their
computer has all the stuff). Just ask for tax trancripts
and you get them - these are just PO\'s with a federal
tax office stamp.
She should give you 3 years tax POs and also a one page
PO indicating that you dont owe any taxes (she forgot the
latter, but I asked her how anyone would know that I dont
owe anything and then she gave me the latter.

Saling Permit (dont if you need this at all)
-------------
For sailing permit, you need to file form 2063, have
you passport and ROUND TRIP plane ticket showing when
you are leaving the US and thereafter returning to US.
You also need the current W2. It is better to have the
tax transripts from above, so she does not have to check
again if you owe any back taxes... I did not have my
plane ticket yet, so could not get it. From all accounts,
you dont need this for your CP, but if you are paranoid,
this info should help.

State Transcripts (dont know if you really need them)
-----------------
The CA State Tax Office (reads State Franchise Board) is
located a minute from the Federal Tax Office. The addr is
96 N. Third St, 4th floor. And you can get your CA state
transcripts (actually she calls them printouts for previous
year tax returns) from here. Just need to show an id (actually
she just asked my SSN, did not even ask my id). Ask here to
stamp the PO\'s with the \'CA State Franchise Board Stamp\'.

She should give you 3 years tax POs and also a one page
PO indicating that you dont owe any taxes (she forgot the
latter, but I asked her how anyone would know that I dont
owe anything and then she gave me the latter.

Cheers - hope this helps
