For a start the article is wrong. It states that an immigrant can stay in the country for the "period of time granted by a DOHS employee at the port of entry". That's not necessarily true, if you, for instance renew your H1, you can stay here for the validity of that new document (because you get a new I-95 with the renewal). Subtle perhaps but it would be nice to have facts right.
But how stupid is this? Let's see, up until now people could send their passports down to washington and get new visas, at least the DOHS had a chance at that point to review your application. Now, what's going to happen, people are going to stay perfectly legally in the country without renewing their visas because who wants to go through that hassle and risk having it denied overseas. So the DOHS doesn't even get to review people every few years.
What morons, how can it possibly be argued that it's an increase in security when these people are ALREADY ALLOWED TO STAY HERE just by virtue of extending their underlying petition?
