Check or Money Order. Does it matter?

I know if you send a check you would know when it gets cleared and thus know that your case was a little further along but does it matter beyond that whether you send a check or money order for the citizenship fee?

No it doesn't matter. By the way, you can also find out if the money order has been cashed as well. I think a personal check just gives greater control as you can have proof of payment by ways of a canceled check or copy of a check image online. On the other hand, money orders get cashed faster because the money is "guaranteed".

It doesn't matter.

Personal check is better because you can see immigration receipt number on the back of check that was cashed before you receive the immigration-issued receipt notice letter. I know it will take time for USCIS to cash the personal check.

For money order, there is no way to know if money order is cashed even though it is faster way. Also, there is no way to get the immigration receipt number when money order is cashed before you receive the immigration-issued receipt notice letter.

Cashed checks are more readily viewable (from your bank) whereas for money orders you have to start a trace by contacting the money order company (some of which may charge a fee for this service).

We use pers checks because once it is cashed we can view the processed check image. I know that MOs can also be confirmed but I don't know if the bank can give us copies of it after cashing it. We have used both for various jobs and there is no difference otherwise. The trouble may be when there is need to show proof of payment.
