Charleston Interview Experience

Hello friends,

Just came back from Charleston. Interview went great but NO OATH (you were right Adina.) they said they WERE doing it during summer when they were in mad rush to get a lot of applications complete. no they have no rush (dang it!) so .. he said I can expect oath within 2 months.

Interview experience:

we both + kids reached the office at 12:45. mine was at 1:15 and my husband's was at 1:40. at the reception, NO CELL PHONES are allowed. so my husband had to go back to the car and put them back. we went in. there are 3 or 4 counters. only one was open. there are two rows of seats. one was for finger print check in and the other was for info pass. we did not know where to sit. they asked us to sit at the fingerprint check in row. we were not given any token numbers. there was a lady at the counter talking to the immi, officer so, once they were done, i walked up to him and gave the interview letters. he said someone will call us. at sharp 1:15, an officer called me in. I left the kids with my husband and went in with him. he asked me to raise my hand and swear that i was telling the truth.
he looked through the application, went through it line by line (often painfully... like asking me how much i weigh and looking at me like to confirm... what my eye color was.... and staring into my eyes...etc)
at that time, I heard a lady officer calling my husband's name. then my officer told her that if she can wait for a few minutes he will be done with me so i can go out and switch the kids with my husband. so she waited until I was done. that was nice coz he then started going through the application a little speedily.
he verified my birth certificate. asked me when i came here and on what visa. then verified where i work and address etc., then he came to the section where I put that I received 1 traffic ticket and did not even bother. then he asked abt my trips. I had taken back to back trips for 5 months and 4 months and he asked me the reason. and asked me civic questions and read a eng sentence and write one. that is it!

my husband's was quite different. his officer (the lady) was already in a pi$$ed mode since someone came in with an attorney and fought with her. we saw all that. so when my husband went in, she was not friendly. threw a hissy fit abt his name. he has a loooooooong name and it is abbreviated in most of the indian documents. so she was kind of pain in verifying all the docs and making sure it as my husband etc. then came the section of traffic tickets. she asked for proof that he paid all the tickets. he said he had for one but none for the other. so he showed her the driving records. she KEPT all of them. and he ofcourse nailed all the questions and written and spoken english. so she signed and gave a letter that he passed.
other than that, everything was great.
we were in and out within one hour. they were patient to wait until I was done so i can hold the kids. it would have been nice if we had the oath too.. but atleast one thing was over. now it is a mere formality.
we stayed at a very nice resort so it was like a mini vacation on the ocean.
there is are two desi restaurants too.. so food was not an issue as well.

please let me know if you need more info.

my timeline:
applied in Jan 2006
Fingerprints (in charlotte) march 24, 2006
interview: jan 24, 2007
waiting for oath

Congratulations!

Now you can relax...I am sorry about the oath ceremony. But, hey, it will be a great excuse to visit Charleston again. And, believe me, Charleston is GREAT in spring!!!!!

Adina, I think the year in your PD and FP dates is incorrect. Or can you see into the future? -:)

Thank you both so much. Adina.. did you take an info pass? why is it getting delayed?
it sucks big time to be in your shoes right now. Is it the dreaded name check thing?

SORRY, I meant 2006 not 2007! I need more coffee I guess, I'm not fully awake!

And yes, I did 3 infopasses so far. Last one, this week...I was told that my name check was cleared as of Dec.13, 2006 and that "I was dropped in queue" as of Jan. 18, which means that I should be scheduled for the interview soon. What this word "soon" means for the INS, I have no clue! Anyway, at least "I've got the FBI's blessing", now is just INS matter.

I'll keep you guys posted ...if I hear anything...in this century...

I am sorry abt your situation. atleast you are in queue (whatever that means in ins's lingo).... one of my friend's wife has bee stuck for over 3 years now and another friend's wife's application has been stuck for not sure what reasons for over a year and they moved back to India for good. so she is coming to the US every 6 months to maintain her 6 month limit... did i scare you yet!
sorry did not mean it that way... I can see a light at the end of the tunnel for you :)
good luck
where in SC are u located if you dont mind sharing

Congratulations.

I live in Myrtle Beach and often go to Charleston. Where are the desi resturants located in Charleston? Did you like their food/service?

Hi Jadoo,

we went to this restaurant called Nirlep. it was above average. there was another one on the same street called taste of India. they both are located on Savannah hwy or something like that. apetizer was really greasy but the other stuff was more like homemade. so it was definitely above average.

Hey Samyukta,

I am from Upstate and I will have my interview (whenever that will be!) in Greer. The Oath...like everybody else in Charleston...

You did not scare me...A friend of mine was stuck for 3 years. He finished last year, after 3 years and 2 or 3 mo. of waiting and redoing the FP. It's hard...and frustrating...and annoying. I've been playing by the rules for the last 14 years, since I came in this country. I don't even have a parking ticket...And, what do I get? I'm stuck! Like many, many others...

Samyukta,

Congrats! Disappointing news about the oath, but not a big deal. My name check, etc., has been done for months, and I have a PD in May 2006. Yet no interview so far.

Thank you for the info, Samyukta. BTW, my PD is in April, background checks done, and still no interview. I don't know why the online processing time says June 15, 2006 for Charleston.

Thanks Dana girl and Hank. I dont believe the online status or their processing dates. they are as trustworthy as a three year old
i never trusted them. the reality is far from their online dates. I am hoping both of you will receive your interview dates soon since adina's husband finished his interview already with similar dates.
do u guys fall under greer or charleston?

the only painful thing for us is to drive 3.5 hours again with kids for the ceremony....I have no right to complain though since I am not stuck with USCIS like many others

My office is Charleston too.

Samyukta, you mentioned that the officer looked at your birth certificate. I didn't know that was a required document for the interview. Did he ask for it or did you voluntarily show it?

hank,

We did not take our birth certificates. They already had them on file. When we applied for our Green Card they are mandatory. so they already had them on file.

Samyukta

I have a quick question. when husband and wife are being interviewed at the same time, can one of them carry original copies for Tax transcripts and other take copies with them.

How does everybody generally manage with this situation????

Hi there,

Usually we carried one set of documents. the officers usually dont even ask for additional documentation. may be they will ask for tickets and stuff. in any event, I am sure they will be more accomodative if you tell them that your wife or husband has those and he / she is being interviewd at the same time. and if needed, you can get those from him/ her.
for eg: In my case my husband (genius) told me that they wont ask me for my SSN. so i better put it back in my purse so i dont lose it.
so i put it in my purse and left it with my husband when I went in for the interview. The first question the officer asked me what where is your SSN. I told him i would bring it in a second as it is in my purse outside, he said DONT BOTHER.!!!
so it should be OK...
