Changing social security status after citizenship

Hello all,

I became a US citizen in June 2013. I got my certificate, and I already have my passport.

I went to the social security office to change/update my status as a us citizen after getting my passport.

My mother and brother did the same process, and the got new social security cards about 1 week after
changing their status. When I was there, I was told I would receive a new card in about 2 weeks max.

After about 3 weeks of not receiving it, I went back to the social security office to ask why I never received it. The lady told me that it was not necessary getting a new card, and that my file was already updated.

My concern is that I have read online of similar cases where people get their new card several months later, and I don't want to receive a new card later in case I move. I don't want it mailed somewhere I don't live anymore.

Can anyone can share their experience? Did you get a new social security card when to changed your status?

Thank you for your time.

Does your existing card have the employment restriction wording? Did your mother's and brother's pre-citizenship cards have the restriction?

Did you go to the same office as your mother and brother?

My card does not have any restriction wording, neither did my brother's or mother's. We had been permanent residents for years before becoming citizens. We went to the same office.

I did mine last week Monday and received a new card last Saturday. I got a new one because I added a middle name. If they did not collect the old card from you, chances are they merely updated your status and you did not need a new card.

Did they give you a letter stating that you would receive a new card?

I did not receive a letter stating that I would get a new card, but she told me that I would get it.
I did show her my current card.

My brother and mother did get letters stating they would get a new card.

When I became a citizen, I dropped my second last name(mother's maiden name) and I got a name change confirmation letter along with my certificate at the oath ceremony. My second last name only appeared on my green card when I had it. My current social security does not show my second last name. It coincides exactly with all my other documents.

If they're sending a new card, they're supposed to give you a letter and take away the old card if you show it to them. They did neither, so it looks like they won't be sending a new card.

The OP's concern is that the SSA might send a new card anyway, after the OP has moved to a new address, resulting in somebody else getting their hands on it.

Yes, I've heard people saying they got theirs several months later.

I had updated my citizenship info at the SSA office on the day I took my naturalization oath. I got a confirmation printout from the office but not anything saying I would receive a new card. The lady did say I would be getting a new card. My old card had no employment restriction language on it. Lo and behold, I think 6 or so months later, I did get a new SS card in the mail and it was exactly the same as my older, existing SS card.

SSA taking the old card away - not required.

I have three SS cards and my wife has four (for several reasons - name change, removing restrictions, updating to US citizenship). Each one after visiting different SSA offices in different cities - never once was the old card requested.

Actually SSA specifically asks that you not carry your card with you except mostly for employment purposes.

I got my new SS card recently within 10 days after updating citizenship status.

Giving them the old card is not required, but if you decide to show it to them they'll take it away and shred it.

I did show my current card to the lady. She saw it, but did not take it. I did not get any written confirmation.
