Changing L1 to F1 status

Hello all,

I am currently in the US on an L1 visa. I have got an admit in a
university here. I would want to change the status of my US Visa to
L1. I have two questions now:

1) Do I have to go back to India to get the F1 visa.
2) If so, can I appear for the F1 visa interview without losing the L1
visa that I currently hold.

L1 and F1 should be compatible but your L1 will likely end if you get the F1 since you won't be working for you company any more. COS might be problematic. Getting the visa from the embassy is probably much easier.
