Changing Kids Last Name

Hi,

I had/have a typo in my last name and is different than the one that members of my family have (Father, Mother, Brothers,Sisters)

My wife had earlier changed her last name to my last name with a typo.

Now we are expecting a baby shortly and would like our baby to have the correct last name (same as my Father's or mother's) but would be different than mine or my wife's.

Is this technically or legally okay ?

If yes, are there any adverse impacts ?

I am citizen of India with US Greencard. My kid will be born in US and will be a US Citizen.

Thanks

Thank you very much Sky_Drow for all the links.

I guess my case falls under the "Desire" category which seems to have too much of paper work.

Probably I should select the "common usage" route

NO! Both of our kid's were born in the US, and they bot had the same last name, but didn't match neither my wifes last name (maiden name which we never bothered to get changed in the passport) and my last name. There was only one instance we were questioned by the INS as to how my kids have different last names than us. I gave a legitimate explanation, and we didn't have any issues.

Just before the approval of our GC's we both got our names changed at civil court, and sent the court documents along with the RFE (medical) to VSC. We received our approval notices with our new lastnames.

If you decide to change the last name of your kid at a later date, you will have to go thru the US courts to get it changed.

If you want your name corrected in the passport here's what you should do...

Put a change of name advertisement in a newpaper in India and a newspaper in the US. Fill out a new passport application form and seek a new passport booklet with the corrected name. You will have to enclose the newpaper ad's along with your application.

You will also have to file an application for change of name (US Court). Upon approval you fax that approval to your creditors to get new credit cards with the new name. Also take one to the DMV and the Social Security office to get your names corrected.
