Hello,
I have a question on name change to married name. Recently we got our cards and I have my maiden name on it, which has been misspelled. As I have to get this corrected can I change the name to married name. Will just the marriage certificate be enough? My name on the passport is maiden name and will get it changed to married name very soon.
Thank you for all responses

Since we are going through this, here is the order in which we are updating documents:

1. Change of name in passport (Indian): can take 1 day to 2wks depending on whether you visit the consulate or not. Indian consulate cancels old passport and issues a new one; also gives back old one with a stamp saying "canceled without prejudice. visas still valid."

2. Social security card: Have to show marriage certificate, old & new passports, GC. The SS# doesn\'t change.

3. Driver\'s license: In NY, they dont accept foreign marriage certis. So, you have to 6 points of id etc. (if you need details post here). In other states, it could be much simpler.

4. Credit card, Bank etc.: Only need to visit the bank to register new signature; others just issue a new card over the phone.

5. Change name at work if applicable.

6. GC: Need to file I-90 form. Read the instructions on the INS website carefully. Not all states accept walk-in applications. Call the toll free INS customer svc. number to clarify particular procedures.

kr9 - What if the name is maiden name in marriage certificate?

Do we need a new marriage certificate also??
Thanks in advance..

impact on credit hostory...

Does anyone know what impact does this have on credit history. We are thinking of buying a house in the near future, not sure whether changing last name will have any impact on the credit history. Also, does anyone know how much time it takes to get the new GC, location is St. Louis - VSC was the service center for us.

Thanks a bunch.

This is perfectly normal ... you shouldn\'t have a problem as long as the marriage certificate lists the husband\'s last name also.

kr9 - Thank you for the info. Another question :

Is there any affidavit required for the name to remain same as maiden name in 10th and bachelors degrees etc. from India. If the certificate names remain different from Passport, GC , Soc cecurity card names, is that ok legally for a job??
Also are you aware of any situation like the name in PP, Soc Sec etc is changed and GC name change takes long time like 1 - 3 mos. Does this have any impact on travel??
I greatly appreciate any input.
Thanks..

In most US applications, there is always a column called "other names used", in which you can write your maiden name. And it is very natural to change your name after marriage - a lot of americans do it regularly; so why should any one have a problem with that?

You can never put a date on when you will get your updated GC (you have to surrender your old GC with the I-90 application). Now, in most places, if you are making the application in person, your passport gets stamped (just like at the time when you got your GC) with a temporary visa for travel. In NY, the procedure is different: you have to send your application by mail and then they will schedule an appointment for passport stamping.
