change status from F2 to F1

I entered USA as a F1 student in 2007.

In 2008, I change visa status to F2.

This year, I would like to change my status back to F1.

Could anyone please tell me do I have to go back to my home country if my application is denied?

You can do it from USA. In case if your application is denied, Check the reason for the denial and possible provide necessary documents.
